Sexual dysfunction is a common problem in both men and women. It can be caused by physical and health problems such as heart disease and hormonal imbalances, or by mental problems such as anxiety, depression, and the consequences of previous trauma.

There are four main types or categories of sexual dysfunction:

Desire disorders

These disorders affect sexual desire and interest in sex, they are also called libido disorders or low libido. Low levels of estrogen and testosterone can lead to decreased libido, as well as hormonal changes, health problems (such as diabetes and heart disease), relationship problems, sexual inhibitions, fatigue, fear, depression and anxiety.

Arousal disturbances

These disorders make physical arousal difficult or impossible during sexual activity and can occur in both men and women. The most common type in men is erectile dysfunction. When a person has an arousal disorder, they may be interested in sexual activity, but they may not get any physical satisfaction from it.

Orgasmic disorders

These include lack of orgasm or delayed orgasm, is a common problem in women, but can occur in men as well. Pain during sexual activity, stress, fatigue, hormonal changes, and decreased libido can lead to delayed or missed orgasms.

Pain

These include pain during sex and can affect both men and women. In women, pain can be caused by vaginal dryness, vaginismus (a condition that affects the muscles of the vagina), urinary tract infections (UTIs), hormonal changes during menopause, and other conditions. In men, pain can be caused by Peyronie’s disease (physical damage to the penis), infections such as urinary tract infections, prostatitis and fungal infections, genital herpes, and skin diseases.

If you have any signs or symptoms of any type of sexual dysfunction, talk to your doctor. There are treatments that can help.
